What is Pentecost?

The word Pentecost means “fiftieth day”. It is the great festival, also called the Harvest Festival and is celebrated fifty days after Easter. Pentecost also marks the birth of the Christian church by the Power of the Holy Spirit.

What happened on Pentecost? Ten days after Jesus ascended into heaven, the twelve apostles and many others of His disciples gathered together in Jerusalem for the Jewish Harvest Festival Celebration. While they were indoors praying, a sound like that of a rushing wind filled the house and tongues of fire descended and rested over each of their heads. This was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on human flesh promised by God through the prophet Joel – this prophecy was given 800 years before Christ.
Joel 2:28-29 (NKJV) 28 And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
